CIA Doc The 1953 UFO Robertson Panel

In January of 1953, a group of scientists was convened to discuss UFO activity in the US, this document released by the CIA in 2016 discusses who was present at the meeting and what it was about.

When we talk about UFOs in the US, most non-believers take this as fantasy and misguided interpretations of aircraft sightings, but few of them actually research whether sightings are legitimate or if there are government documents supporting the validity of an existing UFO problem. According to the document we've attained, in 1953 UFO activity was so prevalent that a group of scientists was gathered to discuss the issue - this panel would later be referred to as the "Robertson Panel".

Members of the UFO Robertson Panel

Dr. Luis Alvarez (PD)
Present at the meeting were reputable professionals, one of them, a Dr. Thorton Page, from John Hopkins Hospital. The advisory professional were:

  • Dr. Robertson,CIT
  • Dr. Luis Alvarez
  • Dr. S. Gondsmit, Brookhaven
  • Dr. Thronton Page, John Hopkins
  • Dr. J.A. Hynek, Consultant to ATIC
Also in attendance were staff members of the Office of Special Investigations (CIT):
  • Dr. H.M. Chadwell
  • R.L. Clark
  • P.G. Strong
  • F.C. Durant III
  • Lt. Col. Oder (P&E)
  • D.B. Stevenson (Weapons)
Other members of US governmental and military agencies were also present from ATIC, The Navy Photo Interpretation Lab, and Air Force Directorate of Intelligence.

The document released by the CIA does not contain the whole spectrum of discussions regarding the issue of UFOs or the full appendix analysis, however, it lists the conclusions the panel came to stating that UFO activity, or activity reported by civilians, is not of great concern to the US government in terms of security, but it did contain a section that stated, "operationally", a UFO presence could hinder military equipment, jam radar and possibly down defensive systems, and they noted that a possible psycological threat could affect the general public, stripping them of their ability to defend themselves and the country. So no threat to security offensively, but a threat to operational and psychological spectrums.

CIA Document "UFO Robertson Panel"

We've gathered the doc for you to read the parts of the UFO Robertson Panel that were made available. The first line reads:
"On January 14, 1953, an ad hoc panel of scientific consultants was convened to review the "Unidentified Flying Objects" problem."
